Is the 3,000-Mile Oil Change a Myth?

Several years ago, it was recommended that oil for vehicles be changed every 3,000 miles, but that recommendation is quickly being discarded.

Due to changes in engine manufacturing, materials used, and new synthetic oils, you do not have to change oil as often. The current recommendations, depending on vehicle manufacturer, can be 7,500 to 10,000 miles.

There are other factors that affect how often you should change the oil. Severe driving conditions such as towing, excessive stop and go traffic, extreme temperatures of heat and cold, and frequent short-distance driving can all affect whether the engine is running at its peak performance and how hot the oil gets. Many new vehicles have oil monitors that monitor all of these factors and then indicate when you need an oil change.

Our service technicians at Piazza Honda of Pottstown will help you figure out when it is best to change your oil. Come by Piazza Honda of Pottstown or call for an appointment today.
