How to Interpret Safety Ratings

In order to help consumers choose a safe, secure vehicle, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) assign safety ratings to each car that they test. The basics on their testing system and safety designations are set out below.

The IIHS has a series of five crash tests that each car is put through. Based on how well they sustain an impact at various speeds, cars earn a rating from poor to Top Safety Pick. The best cars are rewarded as Top Safety Picks+. The NHTSA depends on data from three crash tests to label a car from one to five stars in safety performance. It is important to note that cars can earn different ratings for each type of crash test they are put through.
